Making quality handmade leather goods take time and attention to the details. Stowe Provisions uses only the highest quality materials to produce our goods. Full grain genuine cowhide leather, eco-friendly dyes and oils, and several pairs of hands.

Our leather comes from Hermann Oak Leather Company. Lewis Charles Hermann started tanning leather in St. Louis, MO is 1881 to serve the local harness trade. Three more generations of Hermanns have followed in his footsteps to bring the finest vegetable tanned leathers.

When their first building was erected, it was located at the outskirts of town on the Mississippi River. Though greatly expanded, the company remains on the original site just north of downtown St. Louis. Herman Oak’s tanning process has not changed much through the years. They still use the finest natural tree bark in their tanning liquors for richness and texture. The leather is soaked in ground-vats until it is firm, strong and tight-fibered. Hermann Oak’s technicians hand-work each side for a smooth, consisten, even-colored piece of leather.

Quality leather begins with the best hides. We use only Prime Grade Heavy U.S. Native Steer Hides. The natural vegetable tanned leather uses materials derived from tree bark and various other plants during the tanning process, the only form that is suitable for leather carving and stamping.
